Q.

harsh cough

my 13 month old son began a hard barking cough last night at about 11pm. There was no indication of this before, he simply woke up with this terrible raspy noisy breathing and barking cough. He has had a runny nose for about a week now but thats it.
He has no temperature, is there a chance he will get one and will it be high or slight temperature? I am so worried about another convulsion as he had one 2 weeks ago when he had roseola.

He is at home now but his chest sounds so bad. I have given him iliadin nose drops to unblock his nose and venteze syrup for his breathing. Do I need to nebulise him at all (i have not used one before but hear they help a great deal) and with what? What else can I do for him and does he need to see a doctor or can i treat it at home myself. (My 6 year old niece has also developed a barking cough since yesterday although her breathing is not raspy and noisy like his is, they are in contact quite a bit)

This sounds like croup. If he is at all distressed and if he seems to have any breathing difficulty he should be seen by his paediatrican.
