Hard Stools- 5 mth old

Hi Doc,

Hope you can give me some advice. I have a healthy 5 mth old baby girl. She has been exclusively fed Nan and nothing else- waiting unitl 6 mths to introduce solids. The problemm started a week ago when i noticed that she couldnt pass stool..she screamed throughout the process and the pooh looked very dry and unusually hard. Since then her appetite has also decreased..and she's more fussy than normal. The paed recommended Laxette which i did give her. That night she poohed quite a bit but also cried for most of the night. She wasnt herself the next day and presently, the problem still persists. What could be wrong with her?

Please advise..

Your baby is constipated which is very common.I presume that up to now she has been very regular. So it may just be a passing phase. Often the cause is a small tear in the anus in a young baby. This causes pain on passing a stool.Try using one infant glycerine suppository and see if that helps her to pass a stool. If the constipation problem recurs after this ask your paediatrician to see her again and to look specifically for an anal tear.
