Hard Stools

Dear Doc
My son is turning 3 in 2 week''s time and is currently potty training. He does his wee in the toilet fine for months now and started making his poo in the toilet at creche and home too. It''s now just over 1 month that he refuses to make his poo in the toilet but only his nappy. His poo is extremely hard at times like little round balls. And he goes into the corner and you can see that he struggles at times. It''s been like this for months. He does drink water, and I''ve given him milk of magnesia (not working) and have been giving him Laxette (not working). What else can i give as this is ongoing everyday! I feel so sorry for him.

It seems that the problem is that for some reason your son is keeping his stools in. This is causing him to become constipated. Is there any possible reason that could have caused your son to go backwards as regards his toilet training? Make sure that he is on a fibre rich diet and gets plenty of fruit to eat. Do not give him any hard cheese.Give him Duphalac liquid 5ml twice daily for 14 days and see if he becomes more regular. If not continue on a once daily dose of Duphalac 5ml daily until he seems to settle into a good routine again.
