Hard Stools

My boy is now 5 years old. SInce birth his stools is very hard. It mostly comes out little balls and is very dark of colour. I did speak to our GP before, and he just said that it will come right after a while, as it is all the antibiotics, pennisillins and cortosone that caused his tummy to go hard. He was very ill the past years with cronic bronchitus. My boy also got asthma. He does not have a healthy appetite. He will eat toast and his Coco Pops pap in the morning, but refuses to eat anything else. He will go the whole day without eating, not even sweets. I always have to force him to eat something, but he will then settle for toast. At the Creche the teachers say he eats his food, but at home he doesnt. He drinks alot of water and milk, he loves any fluid. He likes to eat dairy products, like yoghurt and custard but not other foods. He also do not want to go to the toilet to do his number 2. He want to do it in his underpants and says that it hurts too much to go to the toilet, but he feels ashamed of doing it in his underpants. I am worried as he is going to a primary school this year as grade R. Can it be that because of his hard stools, thats why he doesnt want to eat, as he might feel bloted. What can I give him to help him make his stools better and eat?

Your son has a very significant problem with constipation. This is going to cause him a lot of problems when he goes to school soon. His diet certainly is part of the problem and he is definitely not eating enough fibre and fruit. He does appear to drink enough.I would not like to advise you about any treatment without him being seen by a paediatrician first.
