Grinding teeth

Dear Doc

My 6 year old son has a tendency to grind is teeth in his sleep. He has beendoing this since the age of 4. I am worried as I dont know how bad this could be for his teeth.
He is a rather happy child and does not complain of any pain in his mouth.
He tends to grind them rather loud, and sometimes when I awake from my sleep, I try and wake him so that he stops.
Do you perhaphs know wht could be the reason for this. And if I need to take him for a medical exam, what sort of doctor could assist with this problem, if this is a concerning factor.
If any other mums have experienced this with your kids, any light on this matter would help. Thanks

This is quite a common problem and the cause is usually not obvious. It can be a very difficult habit to stop. Fortunately this grinding of teeth usually occurs in children while they still have their first set of teeth [milk teeth] Once the permanent teeth start to come through, which should happen next year with your son, the habit will disappear.
