Frustrated !

Hi there,

I have a 16 month old son, who is happy and was growing well. 4 weeks ago he got bronichal pneumonia and had an upset tummy with mucous, puss and blood, but the culture showed no sign of infection. My paed put him in hospital overnight, and put him on a course of rocefin (not sure if that's spelt correctly) injections. He was in the isolation ward with another baby who had bad gastro. For the last 2 weeks we have been battling with his tummy, he had terrible diahorrea for a week, and then the next week, he would pass "stools" that were only 100% mucous no actual stool. I took him back to my paed who told me to give energade and coke, i was not very pleased with this advice, and i took him to my GP who suggested doing a repeat stool culture and suggested i gve him some interflora. The interflora seemed to help for a while, and then again he started with the mucous in his stool, and then it went on to only mucous no actual stool. The culture came back with blood, puss and mucous but no infection of any kind. We received the results of the culture on a friday and that weekend, he started having high temperatures 39 degrees, 38.2 degrees etc, i phoned my paed who again said 'just give him panado and coke and energade'. I took him to my GP instead who called another paed who put him on a course of Flagyl, Candacide and more probiotics, which seems to have helped, although yesterday he had quite a few, loose stools. (He is currently on his last day of the 5 day course). In the meantime he has also started to refuse to eat. He closes his lips tight and says no and shakes his head. He was a BRILLIANT eater before, he used to have a large bowl of cereal/porrige for breakfast, and then a snack, and then either vegetables or a sandwich for lunch, and then an afternoon snack and then a large dinner. (he also has 3 bottles a day) Now i have to fight with him and he will eat maybe 3 teaspoons of cereal for breakfast, no lunch and no dinner. Do you think this could be part of this whole upset tummy thing? I am so worried about him, i really don't know what to do. He will still drink most of his milk, (he is on s26 gold 3) should i give him more milk to compensate for the lack of food being eaten? Please help, i'm desperate! Also what would you suggest doing if his tummy is not clear?

I am pretty certain that he had an infection due to a parasite called giardia lamblia [giardiasis]The flagyl will cure this illness. He will gradually start eating again but all he needs now is plenty of fluids. Rooibos tea is a good choice. Do not give fruit juices as the fruit sugar will cause diarrhoea again.
