Frequent urination

My 8 yr old daughter goes very often to toilet. It''s like this for a very long time-a few years. There are even times that she would go every 5 mins to wee for about an hour. This usually occurs at bedtime. I expressed my concern to her doctor and he ruled out any bladder infection at that time and said that it could just be stress related??

I howver, still feel very concerned and find it so abnormal for her to go so much to toilet. My younger children probably go less than hlaf the time to toilet than her. i have also discovered that her underwear smell like urine too. At times when we out and she does not get to the toilet in time she would complain that her private part hurts too.

I have been reading about bladder problems in children and so worried that she might have some abnormality. Would an abnormality mean any operation or severe consequences later in life? what type of doctor or specialist should we see?

Thank you very much for the help and advice.

You are welcome. This is a very important question. Of course it is unusual that a girl of 6 years has to keep going to the toilet, often within as short a time as 5 minutes after the previous visit to the toilet. The two main possible reasons for her symptoms which is known as 'frequency' are a bladder/urinary system infection or possible diabetes. Both of thes possible causes can be treated and she will respond well. She should be seen by a paediatrician so that a definite diagnosis can be made.
