Q.

Fluid in middle ear & speach

Hello all

My 2 year old child has been diagnosed with fluid in the middle ear. She does not speak well and the words is not properly formed. The doctor suggested a grommet inplant for both ears.

Has anyone got any remedies on how to remove the fluid.

I would appreciate it if someone who has had a similar operation done on their children kindly explain the side effects, benefits, etc. and childs experience after the operation.

Thank you for your input.

Regards,

This is a very common procedure. The doctor (ENT sugeon) needs to discuss all the details with you. Usually the approach would be to first try some decongestive medication and follow it up after 2-3 months. If the fluid persists (this my be confirmed by a tympanogram) then a grommet implantation is probably warranted.
