Feeding problems, please help

Good day Doctor
My baby son is now 2½  months old. He was doing so fine (gaining weight) on Isomil 1soya formula after 5 weeks, but then all of a sudden his appetite decreased and if he drink he would not finish his formula, could this be due to an allergy towards the soya protein? He was constipated but I gave him a glicerien suppositry and brown sugar water to clean the tummy. He is not sick or anything. When he was 6 weeks old, his peaditrician said that he is lactose intolerant because of eczema rash and he is struggling while feeding, the rash is not appearing anymore. That' s the reason why he was on soya. I' ve changed him to Nan 1 HA but he still struggle (kicking and fisting)what must I do? Should I' ve changed from Isomil 1 to Nan 1 HA. Don' t know whose the most traumatic me or my baby after the feed!

Your baby does sound allergic as he initially developed an eczema rash. He was put onto a soya formula but became constipated on this formula and would only feed with difficulty. About 1 in 3 of cow's milk allergic babies also become allergic to soya. NAN HA is only a partially modified formula and may not be suitable for a highly cow's milk allergic baby. It would be a good idea to ask your paediatrician to do a RAST test for milk and soya on your baby to see if he is definitely allergic to these two feeds. If the test comes back positive you will need to feed your baby on the new Similac Alimentum Hypoallergenic formula. This is rather expensive but some medical aids will pay for it if your paediatrician writes a letter of explanation as to why your baby needs this special formula. If you have any difficulty in getting the tests done, it would be best to see a paeditrician with expertise in paediatric allergies. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
