Q.

enlarged kidneys in unborn child

I just came back from my 36 week scan and the gyne found that my baby boy has enlarged kidneys. What does this mean? Could anything I have done during the pregnancy have caused this, I was admitted to hospital at around 13 weeks and received anti vomiting meds because of a tummy bug. what is the long term prognosis for him?

thanks a lot

It is difficult to be sure as to the cause of your babies enlarged kidneys at this stage. There may be a problem with the drainage of his kidneys such as due to valves in the tubes running from his kidneys to his bladder [the ureters]. This is not due to anything that you have done during your pregnancy. Your baby will be fully examined at birth.
