earpiercing - babies

Dear Doc.

A friend wants to take her four month old baby to have her ears pierced. Surely this can not be good for a baby that young? I have been trying to convince her to wait untill the little one is at least two, but she is adamant.
I do not have any children of my own, so have no knowledge. Am I just being paranoid?

You are being very wise. It is really not necessary to pierce the ears of such a young bay. There is always the risk of introducing an infection if the ear piercing equipment is not completely sterile.

Had my babies ears pierced at 7 months - she didn' t even cry as they put amla on. I kept it clean with surgical spirits for 2 weeks - never had any problems.

My sister had her daughters done when they were 3 and 5 - it was an absolute nightmare!!!

I checked with my pead first before doing it and she said its best to do it between 4 mnths and 8 mnths.

A matter of choice...
