ear infection?

good morning. i was just wondering if an ear infection is contagious? at my littles once day care, there are 4 kids all under 1 year old. 3 of them have one ear that have a funny smell. my little one is one of them. she doesnt sleep to good. wakes up almost every hour. my gp and pead both say her ears are fine. could it be something that they arent picking up? what could cause the smell? could an ear infection be causing her to be a bad sleeper?

thank you in advance.

Ear infections as such are not contagious. However a child's ear should not have a smell-if it does smell then this may be due to a yeast infection called otitis externa. Ask your doctor to see your child again.

Ear infections aren't contagious - but are very common because th eustachian tube (the ear canal) lies flat as opposed to at an angle as in adults. Bottle fed babies are particularly prone to them as milk can run into their ears and go off in there. Also if they are fed lying down too flat the milk can run into their ear canal from their mouths (don't know how, but thats what I've been told).

I've never had an ear infection and didn't know they were painful. Apparently they are extremely painful and hurt more when you lie down - and so they do cause children to fuss about going to sleep (it hurts).

If the fluid doesn't clear up with antibiotics and sits there I think it can get a bit smelly from the infection.

After our fourth ear infection in 6 months and the first time the fluid didn't drain after antibiotics we put grommets in. I wish we'd done it sooner.
