Q.

Down Syndrome Child

Hi Dr

I wonder if you could help me, a friend of mine she is 34 has just had a little boy, she has him in a government hospital as they don't have medical aid. The baby was born with a problem with his intestines where he cannot pass any stools, they have now put a bag on his side and he does pass stools through there, the nurse said it will be like that for about 7 months until some organ grows and then they will do another operation and connect it to the bowl so that he can pass normal stools. He was born +/- 1 week ago, Then today when she phoned the hospital a nurse told her that her son is / has trisyomi 21 is that down syndrome and do you think he will be badly affected, according to my friend he doesn't look abnormal she says his eyes have a slight "chinese" look to them but nothing serious. Please can you give me some more info on this condition

Thanks

Down's syndrome is one of the most common genetic conditions. It may be quite difficult to diagnose at birth but the typical features become obvious within a few days. The eye features you mention are a feature of this syndrome. The child may have other associated problems such as the bowel problem this infant has.Your friend must have genetic counselling and should be seen at the nearest teaching hospital with a paediatric department.Read up more about Down's syndrome on Google. Remember that not all the features described there will be present in one child.
