disturbing behaviour for an 18 months old

Hi Dr, I have an 18 months old boy who has just started at a creche. My concern is whenever he sees other kids he gets so excited and then slaps them. I always have to check on him especially when we are in public places, every chance he gets he slaps them. How do I get this behaviour out of him?

This kind of behaviour can be very difficult to deal with especially in such a young child. The problem is that if you do not try to stop your child hitting other children, the staff and some parents will start to complain and ask you to take him out of the creche. When you are with him and he tries to hit another child tell him to 'Stop doing that' in a firm clear voice.Do not plead with him. If he does not stop take him to his room and close the door. Leave him in his room until he is quiet. At the school the minute he tries to hit a child the staff must divert his attention to something else. If unsuccessful it may be necessary to take him out of the creche until he is more mature.

What I find helps is to say " gentle, gentle"  and stroke or pat gently on the other child and they eventually follow your example.

Its just excitement, and children this age have no idea they are upsetting others or hurting others, but we need to teach them how to behave appropriately by showing them.
