Distended tummy

Hi there. A good friend of mine has a son aged 5. She lost her 1st husband to colon cancer. As a result she is very conscious and diligent about what her son eats - organic fruit and veg, minimal meat, filtered water, plenty nuts and seeds and drinks only rice milk - limited dairy. She also mostly administers homeopathic treatments. He is a slender little chap, not too rosy cheeked, but generally healthy apart from allergies, I think to the fynbos. I have noticed recently that his tummy could be likened to a pregnant woman! It protudes from his rib cage and from the side it is also pronounced. I have observed him carefully and he doesnt dig in his nose or scratch his bottom. Do you think I am being paranoid? Having worked in a pre-school environment for 11 years, I cannot liken his tummy shape to any of the kiddies I have been in contact with. I dont want to go chatting to his Mom unnecessarily - she will go into a flat panic. But, by the same token, if there is cause for concern, I would like to caution her. If she needs to have him checked out should she take him to a GP or to a Paed? I would appreciate some feedback! Many thanks. Regards, Glynis

This is an excellent observation on your part. A child of this age should not have a distended abdomen which is also known as a pot belly. It is possible that this little boy has a form of malnutrition or more specifically a condition called coeliac disease.Coeliac disease is due to gluten intolerance. This little boy really should be seen by a paediatrician or preferably by a paediatric gastroenterologist.
