If the discharge is yellow and pussy and the eyelids are attached in the morning, then it will require evaluation and probable anti-biotics. Some mild discharge may accompany a viral cold, but this is never profuse and settles as the runny-nose and/or cough disappears.

He probably has conjunctivitus as that's going around. My son of 20 months has just had it, although he's at creche (where he would've picked it up) but i know it definately is going around.
Take him to the doctor for a check up and he/she will prescribe antibiotic eye drops for your son.
Nothing too serious to worry about. To help his eyes before you see doctor you can boil some water, cool down to a warm medium with about 5ml salt and bathe each eye with it, separate cotton wall as to not carry infection. And make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning otherwise you will get the infection too.
Hope this helps!
