Diarhea - 3 year old

Hi Paed

My son is now 3 and has diarrhea almost every other day, he hasn' t changed anything in his diet and in fact is eating really well. I de wormed him a month ago and the consistency of his stools seemed a lot harder and not as watery. I don' t know if this could mean anything but two days ago he had bright green luminous stools! What can this be as the constant diarrhea definitely does not seem normal. He doesn' t seem to have any tummy ache but does complain about his bum burning after being to the loo.
I' m really concerned, should I take him to the GP?

In this age group this form of diarrhoea can be due to a parasite called giardia which is not eliminated by the usual worm treatments. The treatment for this parasite is a medicine called Flagyl syrup. Before trying this treatment it is important to send a fresh stool sample to the laboratory to be tested for this particular parasite and also at the same time to make sure that he does not have another kind of infection such as a bacterial or viral infection.Ask your GP to send off the stool sample to the nearest pathology laboratory.
