Q.

Dermoid cyst

Dear Doc.

My 6 month old baby was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst behind her left ear.The cyst is about a centimeter in diameter. I was referred to a paed. surgeon and he said it should be removed. Saw the paediatrician again on friday and she says it should be removed for cosmetic reasons. I am not happy with my baby having surgery at such a young age and am hoping it will go away on its own. What are the possible complications if I leave it and if it is cut out can it reoccur?

Baby is otherwise happy and healthy and reaching all her milestones.

Pls advice. I am desperate.

Thanks

These cysts are usually not dangerous apart from the risk that it may become infected. You may discuss your fear with the paediatric surgeon and ask if they can do it at a later date.

I suggest you follow your docs advice.

The correct mangement of these cysts are to have them surgically excised.

Ask your doctor the urgency. Is there a cancer potential etc. ?
