I am unable to give an exact explanation as to why children cry at night. The important thing is to ensure that they are not ill and to prevent this behaviour from becoming a habit by positive reinforcement. Often the best advice is to leave them alone after you have ensured that they are not feverish, ill or cold, do not have a dirty nappy and are not thirsty. The best drink to offer at night at this age would be pure water.
