Q.

Creche or Home

Hi Doc

I would like your opinion on what you think about sending a baby to crèche or if it would be better to get someone to look after the baby at home? My son will be 11mnths on Friday. He started going to crèche on the 8th of Jan and went for half-day for two weeks. He got sick (ear infection/throat infection and bronchitis), so I kept him at home for 3days. From Thursday last week he has been back at crèche full day (his granny use to look after him in the afternoons when he went half-day, but she is away at the moment and only returning next week). He doesn't seem to be happy - he looks sad (he is normally such a happy baby) and he is "clingy" all of a sudden - he just wants to be in the arms and if someone tries to take him from me, he starts crying - even daddy! He never use to do this before. When he gets back from school in the afternoon he is so tired - they say he is not sleeping well due to the other kids crying - he sleeps light, but that I shouldn't worry because he will get use to the Crèche. Do you think it would be better for him to rather get someone to look after him at home where it is more familiar? I just want to do the best for him and don't want him to be unhappy.

Thank you
Kind Regards

You would do your baby son the world of good to take him out of the creche and let his Granny look after him again. In addition to being very unhappy at the creche your son has already had one episode of infection and this is still in the summer.

Hi again,

We found our maid through word of mouth. The maid at work knew of someone looking for a job.

Bye

we were also advised by our paed to keep them home till age 3. I did with my daughter, and only sent her to pre-school at age 3. We have a fantastic maid who loves my kids as if they are her own, but she used to work for us before the babies came along and I trusted her so I asked her to stay full time. We pay a lot more than creche fees though. There are agencies that place maids, maybe try to have a look on the internet.

Thanks Shelby. Did you go through a Agency or how did you find the maid - we are new to Durban, so I don't know anyone here that I can trust.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Regards

Hi there,

I also toyed with the idea of Creche or home. I decided to keep my 1 year old at home, with the help of a maid. We sent her on childcare and first aid courses and she has 3 kids of her own, so I think is experienced. She is gentle with him. We went through a few maids to find someone suitable, but they are out there.

My friends kids go to creche and have been very ill. Their immune systems are so down, the Doctor advised her to keep them at home. My Doctor said that kids will be okay to go to creche at about 3 years old as their immune systems will be fairly strong by then.

We pay our maid the equivalent of creche fees, so I think in the end it is best for him to stay at home, where he knows his environment.

Good luck!
