My son is 11 months. Last friday he had gastro which cleared up by the monday. The same monday he started developing flu-like symtoms. I took him to the GP and was given Corryx and Broncheze. By the thursday there was no chnage so I phoned the GP and she gave an antibiotic. Its now Sunday, but still his has a very chesty cough and runny nose. He coughs a lot but the phlem doesnt come up, its seems tight. He sleeps well at night and is his normal self otherwise. when should I worry about his chest and how long would it take for his chest to clear up? Its a week now with no change. should I take him to the paed rather?

Your baby has probably had a chest infection called bronchiolitis caused by the RS Virus. Antibitics will no help for this infection.Coryx should not be given to babies of your son's age as it contains pseudoephedrine which is no longer advised in children under 2 years of age.I do not like to give Bronkese to babies either as it contains a bronchodilator called orciprenaline which can cause babies to become very active. This illness may take as long as 6 weeks to clear up.Keep your baby's nose clear with saline nose drops twice a day and give him Mucospect 2.5ml twice daily. Also give him a probitic for 10 days such as Reuterina to counter the effects of the recent antibiotic he was given. If your baby attends a creche he should be given an immune booster daily through the winter months.
