Q.

Coughing -

My 9 month son has been coughing for 2 weeks now. We had chest x-rays , physiotherapy and I resorted to going to the paediatrician on Monday, my child had bronchiolitis and otitis media in both ears. He was put onto bronchodilator pump, antibiotic and cortisone nose spray. He is still coughing a lot, will this treatment take a while to still work? What can I do, he sleeps with the humidifier on at night. Please help.

Bronchiolitis can cause prolonged coughing (4-6 weeks). The monst important thing is that your child is otherwise well (not feverish and drinking well etc) and that there is nothing in his environment that will irritate his airways even further. The most important airway irritant by far is cigarette smoke. Medication is usually only indicated when there are complications.

Been there, done that.My baby also 9 mnth had same thing -was in hosp for a week! It took a while to clear up-I find that the nasal sprays work better to keep it clear and now I also nebulise him the moment I see the symptoms and when he starts coughing. Also put him on Soya Milk. Its been 2 months now-and I feel that the worst is past-he does cough again though with teething:TIP -I put a normal pillow under his matress by his head when he sleeps-If he's alleviated a bit it seems to help lessen the coughing
