Q.

Constipation in a 4 month old

Hello

Please could you give me advise on constipation.

My son is 4 and a half months old. I breast fed him till he was 3 months old and had to go back to work so I started him on formula s26.

He then started to suffer from constipation and the clinic sister told me to put him on Novalac IT, wich i did and for 2 weeks he still suffered alot from constipation to the extent that he tore and got anal fissures. So i then took him to the pead wich told me he thinks that it could be due to the fact he is allergic to cows milk and must rather put him on soya milk, Isomil. He also gave me aduphalac to help his stomach for a week to heal the fissures then to see if it works. However the Isomil is also giving him constipation, I just dont know what to do and I hate giving my young baby laxatives.

But im scared something worse is wrong with him.
What must I do

Thanks

Tanya

Paediatrician

This does sound like very severe constipation. It is important to exclude a condition called Hirchsprung's disease here. This is a problem with the nerve supply to the lower part of the bowel Ask your paediatrician if this could be the problem. One thing is for sure this is not due to a milk allergy.
