Q.

Constipation!! 6week old baby.

Hi
My son is 6 weeks old and for the past 3 weeks he has been struggeling with constant constipation.
He has been diagnosed with a level 5 reflux of his right kidney and is on antibiotics since a week old, he wil be opperated on when he is 3 months old.
We had him at our GP with the constipation and he prescibed a laxitive[ laxette syrup] , but we need to give it to him at least 2 times daily[ if not he gets constipated and does not want to feed[ breast fed]
We also try and give him prune juice instead of the medicine.
My question is"  Will it be better if we change to bottel feed" ?The GP said that with bottel feed there is more tricks to stop the constipation. Or is there something else we can try to ease his constipation?
Thank you.

If a breastfed baby of this age is so troubled by constipation it suggests that he may have a condition called Hirschsprungs disease which is a deficiency in the nerve supply to the final part of the colon. It is absolutely essential that your baby son be seen by a paediatric surgeon and that this diagnosis is either confirmed or excluded.

Hi Hendrik, shame you' re poor baby! I think you must keep on giving him the syrup you' re GP proscribed but not the prune juice. I would just breastfeed...you can also try and give him lukewarm water to drink, maybe dilute the syrup with the water. After a nice warm bath massage you' re baby' s tummy with cream CLOCKWISE...according to the experts this also helps. Formula milk tends to give baby' s constipation, so keep up with the breast feeding, it' s best for you' re baby...

Good luck!
