Childhood Diseases

My daughter is 15 months and suffers from severe constipation. She is very tiny for her age and weighs about 9kg. She eats well when she has passed stools. I try to give her allot of liquids as well fruits but nothing seems to help. If I don’ t give her duphalc everyday she does not pass stools.

her doctor had prescribed some chronic constipation powder that comes in individually packed sachets ( I can’ t remember the name) but anyway I started giving her this and after two days she still did not pass any stools and I could see that she was trying. So I went back to the Duphalac.

Is it safe to give her this every day? Do you think there may be another cause for her constipation?
What can I do to try and get her off a laxative and poo on her own?

It is unusual for such a young little girl to have such a severe constipation problem. She may be drinking too much milk or the formula she is on is not agreeing with her.She must not have cheese of any kind but especially hard cheese. She must have lots of fruit, water, fruit juice and roughage/fibre in her diet. She can have the Duphalac daily for the next 14 days, by which time she should be a lot better,if her diet is correct. If she is not better after this time she should be seen again by your paediatrician. It may be necessary to make sure that she does not have a condition called 'Hirschsprungs Disease' as her constipation seems to be severe. Ask the paediatrician about this.

Anusha, my baby girl also suffered from constipation from 3 months onwards, my doctor prescribed Laxette syrip. It''s 100% save to give every day. I used to give it in her night bottle, only once a day and it worked like magic! Stopped when she did not need it any longer. Perhaps worth a try!
