I am concerned about my 6 year old daughter''s toilet habits. She occasionally suffers from constipation because she takes her time when she has to go.Sometimes refuses to go to the toilet to pass a stool - as she has a fear that it will be painful. She is quite stubborn and I have tried just about everything from prune juice to bribery to get her to use the loo. When she was potty training she would hold it in - and only pass a stool in a bath of water. I have taken her to our GP and he ruled out any complications - just saying that its a pyschological problem that she has. He did check her stomach and confirmed that otherwise her health is fine. Please can you help me. thank you.

This is a very common problem in children of your daughter's age. You are correct she has a fear of passing a stool becuase it may be painful. The longer she keeps her stool in the more likely it is to become constipated and harder and will then cause some pain for her when she eventually does pass the stool. You should try a stool softener for your daughter for about 10 days.Duphalac is a good choice and comes as a liquid or as granules. She will need to take Duphalac twice daily for the ten days. This should help her to get over her fear of passing a stool.
Speak to your pharmacist about the Duphalac.
