Hi Doctor
My son is 2 years old, turning 3 in August. He has a problem with passing stools. Just before passing stools he becomes extremely miserable, he cries, when I try to touch his bums he cries even harder. Last year he was drinking NIdo and the doctor asked us to change to soy milk, he is drinking Isomil 3 (advanced) and I am not sure whether the milk could be the reason for his problem. He eats his vegatables and fruit very well, he does drink water. I am not sure what the problem is. I am worried about him. I do not want him to get to a point where he starts blocking the process because of the pain.

On Saturday he was fine, playing and singing when all of a sudden he started crying (a silent cry) and I was not sure why. When I changed his nappy and I touched his bums he cried. This went on for some time. After about thirty minutes, he got off the bed, screamed and squated on the floor, I then checked his bum and there was something big and hard and when I changed his nappy there was the biggest stool, hard and dry. It really broke my heart, it must have been extremely sore. Please help doctor.

This is an excellent question and you have descibed your son's problem very well. I am almost sure that his severe constipation is caused by the soya formula he is on. This should be stopped and your son should drink full cream cow's milk now.He only needs 2 cups of milk a day. He should have lots of water and rooibos and diluted fruit juice to drink. He should also eat plenty fresh fruit.
