Good Day Doctor. My 2 year old daughter has been suffering from constipation since April this year. Initially we used the laxette and it worked the first time, then she became constipated again, we took her to our GP , and he increased the dosage of laxette and said we needed to give her a dulcolax paed suppository ,every 3 to 4 days. We did that and still she struggled, we then took her to the paeditrician and he just continued the laxette medication but just increased the dosage again and told us to continue using the suppository. In May, we admitted her to hospital and gave her milk of magnesia, duphalac and enema' s twice a day. He did blood tests on her thyroid gland which should everything was normal. Her iron level was low though. He took her off the Nan 3. She is now on duphalac ,15ml 3 times a day and has to get a duphalac suppository every 48hours. She still struggles with constipation and only seems to pass a stool when we give her a suppository. We have been to our paeditrician about 4 times since then. She cries when she passes a stool. We have been to a dietician also, and we live healthy lives. We use a probiotic (alternating between reuteri and probiflora).

Please advise what we can do to help her or if there is a specialist that we need to take her too. We stay in the Western Cape, (Northern Suburbs).

Many Thanks

Your daughter certainly has a very difficult form of constipation. She should be seen by a paediatric gastroenterologist. I am not aware of any of these experts who are in private practice in your area. You should try to make an appointment with Dr E Goddard who is a paediatric gastroenterologist at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Rondebosch.
