constant Diarrhea 5 month old baby

My 5 month old baby girl has had diarrhea for 3 weeks now. She went to her paediatrician last week and went on Lactose Free formula for one week and Reuteri or Probiflora drops, but it has not improved at all. They want to send a stool sample to the lab but the dirty nappies are just green water, there is no " pieces"  to be able to get a monster to send to the lab. What can be causing the diarrhea? I' ve now started her on rice cereal to perhaps get some solids in.

This is a very difficult situation with your baby having chronic diarrhoea. Firstly a diagnosis needs to be made as to the cause of the diarrhoea. At this stage this has not been established. If your paediatrician is not able to find the cause of your baby's persistent diarrhoea,it would be best if your baby was referred to a paediatric gastroenterologist. There are experts in all the main cities in SA. It is best to contact the paediatric department of your nearest teaching hospital to arrange an early appointment.
