Q.

concentration and blending of words in a 7 yr old

My son is 7 yrs old, born on 27/10/96. He is in grade 2. Teacher would like him to go for an assessment as he seems to have a short concentration span and is not able to blend words and recognise words easily. By this I mean that when he is reading a word on page 1 which he doesn't know and gets to page 3, he cannot always tell you what that word is. He seems to have trouble in saying that d o g spells dog for eg. I was concerned in grade 1 already as I noticed this problem, but was told that everything is fine. Do you think that I should take him for an evaluation. I might add that his mathematics is fine, he actually enjoys it and can give you answers very quickly. He has been put back to the lowest group for reading and I am concerned that this might affect him mentally.

If this is what the teacher suggests then it is best to have him formally evaluated.
