Q.

cold prevention impaired kidney function

My 11 yr old son has kidney damage (50%) due to glomerelu nephritis when he was 9. He got Hennoch Shonlein Purp and had his last relapse in March this year. He is on Renitec, Azathioprine and we are busy weaning him of prednisone ( 10mg alt days). How do I prevent him from getting a cold, like a sore thoat or runny nose, as this immediately causes macrosc blood in unrine and starts process again.

I would be very hesitant to recommend any of the commonly used cold preventers for children. Too little is known about their effects in children with impaired kidney function. I suggest that you use only probiotics to boost his immune system. There are several forms available as once a day chewable tablets. Speak to your pharmacist
