Cold and flu medicine

Hi Doctor

I read that you do not recommend giving a 2 year old celestamine or over the counter cold medicine such as Sinumax / Allergex / Coryx etc for the sniffles - but what can we give them?

My paediatrician also prescribed celestamine 3 times this year for my son but no antibiotics as its a viral infection most of the times. My 6 month old baby also had the sniffles but I just use Sterimar on him - he never gets very sick because I breastfeed him.

Is there any over the counter meds that are acceptable for colds/flu for my 6 month and 2 year old?

Thank you.

It is surprising that your 2 year old has had a strong cortisone medicine 3 times this year for what seems to be ordinary colds. Colds are caused by viruses and cortisone is not used to treat viral infections which the body deals with naturally through its own immunity.Allergex is not advised for children especially for colds as it is an antihistamine which makes children drowsy and interferes with their concentration and learning.Sinumax and Coryx contain pseudoephedrine which is a stimulant and is no longer advised for children 2 years and younger. It has been mentioned previously that pseudoephedrine is used to make the dangerous street drug called Tik.

How long can I give Coryx for and after how long a break can I give to my toddler again.

My hubby's family's doctor prescribed 5ml Coryx three times a day for my one year old. After reading the label I noticed that it is the same dosage you would give a 6-year old! My husband thinks I am paranoid and insisted that I give it to our baby since it was "as the doctor ordered", but I still feel uneasy. I stopped after 3 days - our baby was restless, cried a lot and was not his usual self (might also be due to him teething) but after reading now that it contains pseudoephedrine and that this is used in making tik, I am scared that it might have a negative effect on my baby? Should I have trusted my instinct and just stood up for myself or am I being paranoid?

I tried Rinex and Bronchopaed for my 6 month old and it worked ok.
For my 21 month old I gave Corenza C and Prospan.
Best to take them to doctor as well. They might need antibiotics by now.
Good luck.
I know its not easy.
(Can''t wait for winter to be over...)
