Choosing a specialist

Dear Prof

Since our son''s Chiari 1 diagnosis we have seen a number of neurosurgeons and need to choose one to do the surgery. We are going through a very tough and emosional time regarding this, and are by now completely confused about the choice of a neurosurgeon (we are spoilt for choice with the excellent neurosurgeons in the Cape). Can you please help? should be choose a pediatric neurosurgeon or a private neurosurgeon with more Chiari decompression experience? Should we take the hospital where it is to be done into consideration? is a private hospital better than a state hospital? please help us?

many thanks

In my opinion the best neurosurgical department is at the Red Cross Children's Hospital. I cannot recommend it too highly.
