Q.

Child Health

My one-year-old daughter just joined a creche. Today I found out the way they get the babies to sleep. It is in the middle of the summer here and it is about 33 degrees normally. They lay them in their cots and throw a fleece blanket over their faces until they fall asleep. Isn't this dangerous in this heat? The room that they sleep in is also very hot and humid. I'm very concerned about this. Can anything happen if they're doing this?

This sounds really bad and you are correct in being concerned about this practice. Please discuss your concern with the owner of the creche and if you do not get her to stop doing this immediately please remove your baby from this creche.

Are they flippen mad! I would freak if it happened to my child. Please don't leave it there and make other parents aware of the fact that they throw a blanket over their faces. I am sure there is a chance of suffocation especially in really young babies.

Well, Zöe is my first baby and everyone in our town was talking about this creche and saying it's the best in the town. So I went and had a look at the place. It's very neat and tidy. The owner studied Educare and is pregnant with her first child. She has one coloured woman looking after the 0 - 24 month babies. They have 7 at the moment. Only two are babies. The rest are already walking. They're very disciplined with the children. The only problem that I had so far was this sleeping arangement that the coloured woman has. My mother was shocked when I told her this. I'm glad I asked the doctor on Health 24 if this is normal. I made a printout of his reply and I'm going to have a serious talk with the owner. I kept my daughter at home today, because she has a runny nose and didn't sleep well last night.
