Your son is rather old for such severe separation anxiety. He seems to be at a good pre-schoool and will settle down.Keep on reassuring him that you will be back to fetch him after school. Try and help him to make at least one good friend at his school. Eventually with patience and lots of reassurance he will settle down.

Kitty have you asked his teacher if he cried during the day (after the initially sadness at dropping him off and perhaps when fetching him?) If he is fine in the day he will most likely settle in a few days. If he is still crying most of the time while you are gone after a week of trying, perhaps he is simply not ready.

All kids do this when they start pre school my son did it the first week at school and the next Monday he walked in to school like the school belongs to him (some kids take longer but it gets better). Just tell him you love him and you will come and collect him later. I have seen with my kids if you make it sort and sweet it is better and they don’ t cry for that long after you have left (this is not always so easy for us mom but just take a deep breath and walk). He will still make friends just give him time. Just hang in there it gets better.
