Dear Doc,

My son has a history of chest infections. He went to paed last thursday and was prescibed Augmentin ES600, Bisolvon, celestamine and he had a high fever so stopyne. he is now 21 months old, weighing 11kg and 79 cm. the problem is that his chest seems to be not getting any better. he still coughs alot of phelgm and is on flixotide 125 mg 2 times a day chronically. i am also neb him with duloin and pulmicort. the augmentin does not seem to be working any more. In the past I was sometimes prescribed prelone for his chest also. Can I give that to him now ( I do have some left over from last time) cos hsi chest seems to be " crackiling sound"  more esp at night. it is his last day for the antiboitic and he does not have fever anymore. just chesty phlegmy cough and crackling sounds in his chest.
pls advise doc. thanks alot. you have helped me tooo many times in the past and may god bless you.

Thank you, you are very welcome.I am unhappy about your son and the medicines your young son has been given for his chest infection.Celestamine is a powerful cortisone medicine and Stopayne contains codeine which is constipating and may cause dependency. His height is well below the average fo his age and his weight is also below average for his age. He may have had quite a severe chest infection recently and from your description he may have had pneumonia. It is essential for a proper diagnosis to be made of your son's illness and his repeated chest infections. He should be seen by a paediatric pulmonologist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
