Hi Dr
I have absolutely no idea what to look for as far as an eye infection goes - besides an obvious red eye and discharge. So I did some googling to try and find out what is going on with my 2 and a half year olds eye. A few weeks ago, I noticed a slight swelling on my little boys lower eyelid. I have kept an eye on it but there has been no change and the slight little bump has just remained as it. Over the weekend, I have noticed the eye has become a little more swollen and I can see that it is now worrying him as he is rubbing it allot. I managed to look inside the lower lid and there appears to be a little red sore which almost looks like a tiny slit or cut inside the lower lid. It is a tiny bit red but there is no puss and it does not look like a typical infection. Also, the white of the eye is not pink so I do not think it is pink eye? I have read that if it is a blocked tear duct, the best thing is a warm compress and that is NOT going to happen with my very busy toddler. Putting cream on his face is a mission all on its own and is often a two adult job! Do I go to a Dr or do I try and get something from the chemist and if so, what? Just as a history, he does have kerratosis on his cheeks, temples and upper arms which from what I have been told is a build up of proteins in the pores. Could this be connected?
Once again, a big thank you for all your advice on this forum!!!

You are very welcome.Your son's eye swelling sounds like it is a 'meibomium cyst' which is also known as a 'chalazion'.You will find it very difficult to apply heat to the cyst in such a young child. It is usually necessary to see an eye specialist [ophthalmologist] about this kind of cyst which may need to be drained.
