cereals/carbs for baby

My little one is nearing 9 months and i wanted to know what cereals you recommend. Most of the books i have are from overseas and tend to recommend oatmeal? whats the equivalent of that here.
Also, is it ok to give rice cakes to chew on?
We are not big wheat eaters so I' m hoping to stay away from bread or wheat based cereals but at a bit of a lost end as to what to give him.

There are a whole range of baby cereals available and a visit to any well stocked supermarket will give you many choices.Oatmeal would be the same as oats porridge.

Hi there,
My son is nine months and absolutely loves rice cakes to suck and munch on. Only has 5 teeth, so does a lot of sucking on them. You can also get the little rice cakes which he enjoys just as much.
I use purity cereals as well as the cerelac, but there are so many varieties for 8 - 36 months old. Just check which are wheat based ones.
By the way, my son helps himself to what ever we eat, but obviously I monitor him to make sure he doesn' t choke. He gums all the foods for a while and if they don' t dissolve in his mouth etc, then I remove it after he' s made it all soggy.
He enjoys stealing his older brother' s noodles, rice and potatoes as well. So your options for carbs are varied.
Good luck with the experiments. Its such fun to see how they react to all the different tastes and textures.
