Celestone Soluspan injections &  effects on foetus

Hi doc,

I am expecting triplets and scheduled to deliver mid Jan, unless I go into labor. I have already had 4 celestone injections. My gynae prescribed 8 injections.

I know that it is to help babies'' lungs develop to produce surfactant. I just want to know if there are long term side effects for the babies. Is 8 doses a lot? Will the babies have any other issues as a result of the steroids?

Please advise. Thank you.

Celestone Soluspan is a powerful and long-acting cortisone injection and the course of 8 of these injections in a short period does seem to be rather excessive. The benefits of this treatment has to be carefully weighed against its potential harmful effects. The most common side effect of high dose cortisone given to the mother during pregnancy is suppression of the baby's adrenal glands causing a condition called 'hypoadrenalism' at birth.I do not have sufficient knowledge about the dosage of Celestone Soluspan required under your circumstances. May I ask you to write to our Gynaedoc on Health24 with your excellent question. She will be able to advise you.All of the forums are due to close on 23 Dcember, so please write soon.

Thank you doc. I am now 30 wks pregnant and I started taking the injection at 27 wks. The gynae said I could go into labor anytime. I was really concerned about the effects it would have on the babies. Steroids have crazy effects on adults, so I was concerned. The babies are also putting on weight quickly, which I didn''t exoect. Last weekone of the babies was almost 1.5kg and the other 2 were 1.3 &  1.1kg. When I saw the fetal specialist at 18wks, she told me that I would be lucky if the babies are close to 1.5 kg at 34 wks.

Doc, you can imagine my surprise when I was told my one baby was already 1.5kg. And I instantly wondered if maybe the steroids were partly responsible. I was then worried about potential side effects.

Thank you so much for responding.

Have a wonderful and safe Xmas &  New Yr.
