Callouses on 4.5 yo hands

Dear Doc

Our 4.5 yo son has callouses in the middle of his palms where his fingertips/nails touch when he closes his hands. I am a bit concerned about it - could he be stressed? or is it normal? He sleeps well, but isn''t dry yet at night. Further no complaints. he''s had the callouses for some time now.

thanks in advance for your reply.

This is unusual in such a young child. This kind of reaction is seen in older children who play sport such as cricket or hockey and may develop an allergy to the rubber or latex covering the handle of the bat or hockey stick. It is possible that constant pressure due to your son clenching his hands and irritating his palms with his fingernails may be the cause, but again he is rather young for this to happen. It would be a good idea to ask a dermatologist to see your son and see what he/she makes of his callouses.
