Breastmilk - Can it not be enough?

Hi Doc,

My son is 3weeks old. He weighed 3.9kg when he was born. I didn' t have any breastmilk when he was born so he was given a formula(S26) while we were in hospital. On the 3rd day after taking some pills my milk(breast) came thru and i started breastfeeding.

The problem is it seemed like breastmilk wasn' t enough for him bc he was constantly crying and slept for short periods.

The one night he just couldnt stop crying and i could see he was still hungry and my breast had dried out on both breasts bc he had been feeding for more than an hour so i decided go give him formula(S26) 100mls. He drank it and immediately went to sleep. I have since been giving him both breast and bottle(formula)milk and there has been a huge improvement in his crying and sleeping patterns.

Is this ok? Will it not cause any problems now or later?

Thanking you in advance.

Obviously you do not have enough breast mik to feed your rather large and hungry baby son. Once you supplement your breast feeding with formula your baby is quite happy. So there is no problem if you continue to feed him like this.
