Breastfeeding and prawns

Hi all,
I'm due to go to my mother in law's for her birthday dinner next Friday and I know she will be making yummy prawns for dinner. Will this affect my baby if I'm breastfeeding?
I'd rather abstain from the prawns if it will cause an allergy or problem.
Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

Do not eat prawns while breast feeding. You are sure to sensitise your child to them-and shellfish allergy is very dangerous.

Hi Purple

I ate tons of seafood when I was pregnant and I now have a very intelligent son! (I suppose all mom's probably think that of their kids though, hey) :-)

He's almost 6 months old now and I'm still breastfeeding him. Do you think that the Omega oils in the seafood I eat still 'helps him as brain food'???

You don't need to give up any foods when breast feeding.

Prawns are fine.

If your baby fusses and wont feed, then you know he doesn't like the prawn flavour, and you should avoid them in future.

If your family has a history of sensitivity to shell fish, then there is a slight chance that your baby will feel a bit ill after eating, however, you will only know if you try. I am still breastfeeding (my son is 17 months today) and I eat a lot of seafood. My son has been absoloutely fine. I have a sister with severe seafood allergy, but my son has not been at all sensitive to it in my breastmilk.

Remember that what you eat does flavour your breast milk, but that this is a good thing.
