Q.

Breastfed baby constipated?

My 4 month old baby always had a bowel movement at least two times daily. From about a week ago this changed to about one every 2-3 days? She is also very gassy (which she never was?). I still eat the same type of foods. Is she constipated? What can I do to relieve it?

If her stools are still soft and normal then she probably is not constipated. She may be developing a form of lactose intolerance and it would be worthwhile trying her on a lactose-free fomula for a few days just to see if her windiness improves as well as her bowel movements.

I'm going to take a bold move here and say that I disagree with the paeditrician.

She is a breasfed baby and the reason why she might be so gassy, might be the cause of something you ate. Take a good look at your diet and make sure you don't eat anything that causes gas.

There is no need to take her of breasmilk. If your diet is not the problem, try the olive oil. I promise you, it will work.

O, ok. I was going to recommend brownsugar, but what Anita says makes sense. My LO had a lot of stomach cramps when she was constipated and I gave her brownsugar. The cramps never went away, but she eventually did no 2.

I will try this olive oil if it happens again. Thanx Anita!!

Hi Katy

Sorry to but in, but I have the BEST advice for constipation. My LO also suffered from this and I was adviced to give him 1ml of pure olive oil with each feed. You can put it in his milk. This really worked. All these other remedies like brown sugar etc just make their stomach cramps worse.

Olive oil won't harm your baby and you can actually continue giving him the 1ml olive oil in every feed.

Yes, from about two weeks ago when she started at daycare - she drinks breastmilk from a bottle.

Hi Katy

Do you give her breastmilk through a bottle as well?
