Q.

Bowl problems 5 years

I have twins who have had bowel problems since they were small, they would go for 3 to 4 days without passing any stool any showing no sign that they want to and the doctors will give them lxactives now and then, they'll pass stool properly for 2 days then stop. One had an xray of her intestines I was told that she has a very slow metabolism system. Now it has become the norm for them to stay a whole week without passing stool and when they do they are very huge and hard, they may go for 3 days going to the toilet trying to pass stool but to no avail. Please help, I've stopped the laxactives but I feel staying a whole week is to unhealthy. I try and give them lot of water and make sure that they eat atleast a bowl of bran creal every day, they are not very big on fruits but I still try to force them to eat them.

This is obviously not a simple problem and your twins have significant constipation. You have tried simple measures with no benefit, so now you need to take them to see a paediatric gastroenterologist. There are specialists in all the main centres in SA.
