Blocked Sinus

Hi Doctor,

My 8 month old is coughing a lot and has a runny nose. The Sister at the Clinic checked his lungs and they are clear. She gave him Iliadin for kids and a Celestamine/Flemlite mixture. It has been a week now and he is still coughing. I stopped the Iliadin after 5 days and started using Salex and the syrup mixture is almost finished now.

The Sister suggested taking him to the physiotherapist to have his sinuses suctioned. Do you think that is the way to go? Is there anything else I can give him in the meantime? I do have Mucospect in the cupboard. Would the nebulizer help to clear the nose? I have Duolin for that.

Thank you.

Babies do not have sinuses so cannot have blocked sinuses.Your baby has recently had a bad cold which is caused by a virus infection which has also affected his chest. The clinic sister gave him Celestamine which is a very strong cortisone medicine and should not be given for a cold. The important thing here is to clear his nose. Use Salex nose drops at least twice daily. Ask your pharmacist for a nose suction device so that you can clear your baby's nose by sucking out the excess mucous. It may help to give your baby some of the Mucospect syrup 2.5ml twice daily. This illness usually lasts for at least 10 days to 2 weeks before your baby will get better by himself.

Have the same story with my 1 yo. Doc prescribed Celestamine, so guess its not unheard of. But, it also did nothing for the cold...
