Q.

Bilirubin level

When my baby boy was 2 weeks old, his SBR was 188. When he was 5 weeks old his SBR is 104.

Last week I got worried and went to the GP to have his bilirubin level tested and was given the results as Total bilirun 99 and direct bilirubin as 40. What is the SBR from this result? My appointment with the paediatrician is 2 weeks away and I'm really anxious to know whether the level has gone up or down. Thanks in advance.

The level has gone down, but your doctor is concerned because the so-called conjugated bilirubin level is high. Your baby needs to be checked to be sure that this is simply a prolonged jaundice due to breast feeding and nothing else is causing the bilirubin level to be raised.
