Q.

Bedwetting pre-teen

My 11 year old son still wets his bed. He soils his underwear during the day- not everyday. He says he cannot feel when this happens. He is the oldest child in the family. This obviously affects everyone in the household. My husband and I are ar loggerheads as to the apporach we should be taking. What do I do?

Paediatrician

This should have been sorted out much earlier.Your son must be seen by a paediatrician as soon as possible. Highly effective treatment is available, but he must first be investigated to ensure that his urinary system is normal.

Go and get him seen to but also try these tips:
Follow up on him often during the day - asking all the time has he gone to wee or number 2 (you say he soils his pants - do u mean no 2 or wee?). Make him go and sit down often even if he says ' he doesnt have to'
he is old enough now that you can reason with him & say 'if u cant feel it then you have to be asked all day long'
make sure he goes to wee before bedtime and no drinks at least hour before bedtime.
Does he mess at school or only at home?
Try giving him a reward system for dry/clean days. Also make a chart and put it in a visible place for the whole family to keep track of. Perhaps if it was visible to everyone he would rather try harder. It could be a case of being too busy or distracted to go to the toilet.
He should at night though be able to control himself. Another option is to make him wash his bedding and sheets and undies himself.
Definitely go and see a doctor though to make sure it is not a physical problem.
