BCG Vaccine at birth

Hi Doc
I recently saw a friend' s baby who developed a pimple as big as a marble from the birth vaccine. My daughter never developed any blister, mark or pimple whatsoever. She is now 7 months old and up to date with all vaccines, but I' m worried about that first one. It is said that the pimple developes to show that the vaccine is working, yet it is never to be repeated. Please advise. Thank you.

In most cases the BCG scar is very small and heals quite soon. Your friend's baby seems to have developed what is known as a BCG abscess. She should ask her paediatrician to see her baby just to be sure that all is well.

My daughter had her BCG on 14/3/08, never came up until about 2 months ago. It then became a huge red blisterlike bubble on her arm, which popped one evening in the bath. The amount of puss coming was frightening. Had her at our GP and paed and both said to leave it however I went to 3 different baby clinics and was told in no uncertain terms that the reaction is definitely not normal and I need to get to a doctor ASAP! I am really worried!!
