Q.

Baby' s overweight - what to do?

Hi doc,

My baby girl is 15 weeks old, is 63cm long and weighs 8,2kg. I breastfed her for 8 weeks and now she is formula-fed (S26 Gold) and drinks 250ml 4 times a day (nothing at night as she is sleeping through!) Ever since she went onto the formula she has been gaining weight very quickly, and by now I really feel she is looking overweight. She has a double chin, 3 rolls on each leg and even little rolls on her back! For the past 3 weeks I' ve used 2 scoops less formula powder per bottle whilst keeping the same amount of water, however this has not made a significant difference and now she is spitting up after feeds more than she used to, so I think the thinned-down milk is not good for her.

I have taken her to my paediatrician, he suggested that I substitute one bottle a day with thinned-down juice.

Do you agree with this? I somehow feel she is too young to start drinking juice and am scared that this will be just empty calories and will not make a difference to her weight.

What do I do to help her lose a bit of her fat?

Don't give her juice now.In any case juice is rich in natural sugar called fructose and will only add calories besides being an inappropriate feed for a young infant.Your baby is definitely overweight and her weight is presently above the top percentile line on the growth chart for her age-this is the 97th percentile [ the top 3% of babies of her age].She may be better on a formula for hungry babies the Novalac formula for hungry babies.

Have a great day!

Thanks Doc I agree with you on the juice issue. Am I giving her too much milk? She only has one bowel movement a day (dark green!). If I start her on Novalac should I feed her less?
