Baby turning blue after hurting big toe

On Monday my 2 year old hurted her big toe. It was only a small scratch. She did''nt cry, but became extremely pale, then blue and her eyes rolled back in her head. She lost consciousness. I rushed her to the nearest hospital, where they took her heart rate and blood pressure, it was normal. The child recovered after half an hour, but was very pale for the rest of the day. The dr. at the hospital sent her for X-rays to see if the toe was broken, it was not. The dr. at the hospital said it was a syncopy attack, the child fainted from the pain of the toe that she hurted. The next day I went to see my peadatrician and he tested her for heart defects, full blood count and sent her for an EEG. All came out normal except for a low iron count. This whole episode still puzzles me, because the child looked as if she was dying at moment.

Your child had a typical breath holding spell which is common at this age and in your daughter's case was due to the fright she got when she hurt her toe. These breath holding attacks are very frightening but completely harmless. If she ever has another episode just blow gently on her face and she will soon start breathing normally. Children always start breathing again so do not be frightened. She will grow out of these breath holding spells.
